10 e-commerce platforms make selling simpler

When the Internet was first opened to the public, its promise seemed to lie in the exchange of knowledge and information. However, it very quickly also became a story about commerce, proving that whenever people gather, even if it's online, someone will always try to sell you something.

In the early days of the Web, e-commerce tools were hard-coded into a site. Now, these tools come in two varieties: stand-alone servers that run as full-fledged websites, or plug-ins created by content management tools such as Joomla or WordPress that can be integrated into an existing site.

Linux developers have accepted a patch that undoes one of Microsoft's most embarrassing open source gaffes. Microsoft developers had to name a piece of code used by the software and for some reason chose the hexidecimal moniker 0xB16B00B5 -- leetspeak for "Big Boobs."

An ugly consequence of the federated tools we all use is that they often siphon much more information about us than we realize or would want. (Beepmo says it will fix this "mistake.") Social media companies like Foursquare have been doing that kind of Twitterspamming forever.

After Oracle, OpenSolaris rises again

While some of the open source projects that Sun Microsystems created -- and which I used to work with -- have maintained a high profile, the one most associated with Sun in the minds of system administrators has been strangely forgotten. Whatever happened to OpenSolaris?

The OpenSolaris story illustrates a key value delivered by the liberties provided via open source. When your vendor changes direction, what do you do? Traditionally, you have five options:

Think through your cloud plans -- or else

Most enterprise IT organizations focus more on technology than on thinking -- a sad tendency I've often pointed out. Thus, I was happy to see InfoQ's Mark Little review an article by Steve Jones of CapGemini. Both see the same lack of thought in how enterprises use technology. In fact, it's worse than not thinking -- there's an active dislike of deeper consideration that gets expressed as ignoring or even disparaging planning, architecture, and design in IT.

I don't know about you, but I can tell in about a minute how much someone I've just met knows about computers, networks, and security. It's in what they say, how they respond, and what they think about particular subjects. I bet most of you can do the same. And like me, I bet you've found these first impressions to be surprisingly accurate.

Dell announces 'storage blades,' converged data center strategy

At its annual storage conference, Dell today announced a storage array in a server blade form factor that can be combined with networking and server blades in a single chassis.

Each Dell EqualLogic PS-M4110 Blade Array comes in four models and can hold up to 14 drives for up to 14TB of data per array, up to 28TB per group (two blades) inside a blade chassis, and up to 56TB with two groups inside one blade chassis. The drives come with a native encryption option.

Data deduplication -- the process of detecting and removing duplicate data from a storage medium or file system -- is one of those simple ideas that gets complex in the implementation. Bing and Google deepen social integration in search

Microsoft and Google are each taking steps to extend the social networking capabilities in their search services, with the goal of making it easier to find or share useful results.

Bing search results will now include tips and recommendations from Foursquare users, Microsoft said in a blog post Wednesday, while Google is apparently testing a feature that lets users share a link in Google+ directly from their search results page.

Once again, IT is going away or becoming less important or being relegated to nonstrategic support responsibilities or something. We've heard this tune for decades. U.S. appeals court refuses stay on injunction on Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales

A U.S. appeals court denied Samsung on Thursday a stay on a preliminary injunction by a District Court on the sale of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, in a patent dispute with Apple. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit also denied Samsung's motion to expedite its appeal against the District Court's orders. "Samsung may of course significantly self-expedite the case by filing its own brief early," the court said, while stating that the Korean company had not shown that the time for Apple to file its brief should be shortened.
