BlackBerry sales fell again in Q2 but RIM's loss narrowed

Shipments of its BlackBerry smartphones fell in the quarter ended Sept. 1 as Research In Motion posted its third straight loss. There were 7.4 million BlackBerrys sold in the quarter, down from 7.8 million in the company's March-to-May quarter. RIM's revenue fell to $2.9 billion, compared with $4.2 billion a year earlier. But the company's revenue beat the consensus estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, of $2.5 billion.

Paradox of Hoaxes: Back to the Future to Spinach

This summer's Back to the Future hoax wasn’t the first time a fudged screenshot of the DeLorean’s time counters spread across the internet. Not not only were people spreading incorrect information, but the collective internet consciousness didn’t recognize the return of the same error. How to secure the Internet with a single service

I've been writing about how to secure the Internet for almost a decade, including in this InfoWorld position paper (PDF), which gives most of the details. My proposal is this: A new Internet channel must be created to establish pervasive authentication and improved services for identifying the bad guys.

That might seem like a tall order in today's ultramalicious online world, but it can all be readily done using existing protocols and integrate with all legacy systems.

More than two years ago, I wrote about the persisting value of tape as an archival backup medium. For example, last year startup Nutanix unveiled a virtualized server that is clustered together with solid-state and hard drive storage, all of which can be managed under a single console view.

You're sitting around. You have some computing to do. Ten years ago, you would ask your boss to buy a rack or two of computers to churn through the data. Today, you just call up the cloud and rent the systems by the minute. This is the market that Google is now chasing by packaging up time on its racks of machines and calling it the Google Compute Engine.

Asked if Intel customizes microprocessors for its biggest customers, Diane Bryant said: "Yes." She didn't go into details, but her words shine a light on another part of the big-time chip business that's rarely discussed. There are cases where chip makers such as Intel and AMD will provide certain customers with chips that other may not have access to -- and this could become a key battleground as web giants such as Google and Facebook extend their efforts to redesign the hardware underpinning their massive web services.
