Why the NFL Sucks at Testing for Concussions
There is no doubt concussed NFL players get top-notch care after they're properly diagnosed. The problem is they aren't always properly diagnosed. Neurologists say the league simply does not have adequate tools needed to do the job on the sidelines.

9 Windows Start menus for Windows 8

Search as you might, you won't find a single bigger source of ire in Windows 8 than the new Modern UI (aka "Metro") Start menu. Defenders of the new full-screen, touch-based app launcher and notifications dashboard claim that Windows users were just as antsy about the original Windows 95 Start menu. Remember all the "Classic File Manager" replacements from that time? All true, but Windows 8's Start menu has thrown many people -- seasoned veterans, early adopters, and new users alike -- for a curve. And Microsoft has been adamant that the old Start menu is gone for good.

The Perl programming language turns 25

Let me get this out of the way up front: Perl isn't a beautiful language. It's kind of a mongrel pup with pedigreed academic roots: C, AWK, Lisp, Pascal, sed, and a bit of Smalltalk and C++ tossed in to keep the more pedestrian programmers happy.

Your guide to safe and secure post-holiday shopping

The truth is you didn't get a 60-inch LCD TV as a gift this holiday season. You'll have to buy it yourself. And most likely, you'll go to the last remaining big-box store, compare picture quality, and return home to your computer to find the best deal online.

Still feel a little nervous buying a big-ticket item over the InterWebs? Keep in mind it's at least as safe as handing your credit card to a complete stranger for five minutes every time you eat in a restaurant. Nonetheless, you can take several steps to reduce the risk.

Cloud storage specification gets ISO approval

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has ratified the Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI), a set of protocols defining how companies can safely move data between private and public clouds.

The Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) Cloud Storage Initiative Group submitted the standard for approval by the ISO last spring. CDMI is the first industry-developed open standard specifically for data storage as a service.

Starting with version 25 of Google Chrome, browser extensions installed offline by other applications will not be enabled until users give their permission through a dialog box in the browser interface.

At the moment developers have several options to install extensions offline -- not using the browser interface -- in Google Chrome for Windows. One of them involves adding special entries in the Windows registry that tell Chrome that a new extension has been installed and should be enabled.

By 2020, there will be 5,200GB of data for every person on Earth

During the next eight years, the amount of digital data produced will exceed 40 zettabytes, which is the equivalent of 5,200 GB of data for every man, woman and child on Earth, according to an updated Digital Universe study released today.

To put it in perspective, 40 zettabytes is 40 trillion gigabytes -- estimated to be 57 times the amount of all the grains of sand on all the beaches on earth. To hit that figure, all data is expected to double every two years through 2020.

Patent cases will continue to color mobile market in 2013

Over the past year, patent battles have been fought by tech companies in courtrooms all over the world. The litigation is far from over though, and will continue throughout 2013. This is what's at stake on the patent battlefield in the near future. The patent brouhaha reached its high point in August when a California District Court jury awarded a $1 billion victory to Apple in a patent trial against Samsung over tablets and smartphones. Samsung is appealing the verdict and the two companies are continuing litigation in other countries too.

Review: Riverbed Granite takes iSCSI across the WAN

Bringing branch office servers and file shares back to the data center is generally easy to do, especially with the use of WAN optimization solutions. But sometimes -- for the sake of performance, practicality, or politics -- a server simply must remain in the branch. It was for these intransigent servers, and to satisfy the needs of both server-hugging branch offices and control-hungry IT, that Riverbed Granite was born.
