Two bad bosses do more than double the damage

Bad management decisions have a nasty habit of trickling down the business chain to ill effect. For example, when a corporate office sets policies that make no sense for those doing the actual labor, it should be no surprise to see these same guidelines complicate the lives of us working stiffs.

Web-based conferencing comes of age

As more people telecommute, having a reliable way to connect via desktop video conferencing takes on greater importance. And for employees working in the office, Web-based meetings are a less expensive and less time consuming alternative to business travel.

Web-based conferencing services aren't new, but they have been getting better, easier to use and less expensive. The options range from one-on-one desktop screen sharing to group video chats to large-scale presentations such as Webinars or "virtual conferences."

CYA: 3 rules to keep a systems crisis from taking down IT

These days, all but the smallest organizations spend mountains of money building redundancy into their infrastructures. As business depends more and more on those systems to function at even the most basic levels, the capital plowed into highly redundant disk arrays, bulletproof backups, and highly available virtualization infrastructures has become an expected cost of doing business.

Why admins should know how to code

We've all been on the receiving end of that essentially unanswerable question, "What do you do?" I usually answer, "I work in computers," just to see where the questioner's mental association goes. I often get responses like, "Oh, you make websites?" or "Oh, you mean like you are a programmer?" or the dreaded "Oh really? Can you fix my laptop? It's been doing this strange thing where blah blah blah."

Review: 6 free email servers for small business

Even as social networking continues to gain in popularity, email remains the undisputed workhorse of messaging, far eclipsing all other forms of electronic communication. Email administration can be a costly function, especially for small to midsized organizations, and many administrators are looking for alternatives to enterprise-sized (and priced) commercial products.

Midnight mystery: The case of the 'weird' laptop

Making the web accessible to everyone has been central to the mission of the W3C since the dawn of the browser. Accessibility guidelines abound, but sadly, easy to use tools are less common. Developer Lea Verou's new color contrast ratio tool changes that by giving developers a simple way to test their color schemes and create more readable websites -- and that benefits everyone on the web.

As we discussed last week, when it comes to project portfolio management, the best approach is to get rid of the project governance process entirely. How? By eliminating projects as a class of activity altogether.

Instead, next-generation IT organizations should manage all activities as an ongoing stream of releases, doing so by embracing the agile variant scrum (last week's topic) -- with additional wrinkles (this week's topic).
