Search as you might, you won't find a single bigger source of ire in Windows 8 than the new Modern UI (aka "Metro") Start menu. Defenders of the new full-screen, touch-based app launcher and notifications dashboard claim that Windows users were just as antsy about the original Windows 95 Start menu. Remember all the "Classic File Manager" replacements from that time? All true, but Windows 8's Start menu has thrown many people -- seasoned veterans, early adopters, and new users alike -- for a curve. And Microsoft has been adamant that the old Start menu is gone for good.

Let me get this out of the way up front: Perl isn't a beautiful language. It's kind of a mongrel pup with pedigreed academic roots: C, AWK, Lisp, Pascal, sed, and a bit of Smalltalk and C++ tossed in to keep the more pedestrian programmers happy.
The truth is you didn't get a 60-inch LCD TV as a gift this holiday season. You'll have to buy it yourself. And most likely, you'll go to the last remaining big-box store, compare picture quality, and return home to your computer to find the best deal online.
Still feel a little nervous buying a big-ticket item over the InterWebs? Keep in mind it's at least as safe as handing your credit card to a complete stranger for five minutes every time you eat in a restaurant. Nonetheless, you can take several steps to reduce the risk.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has ratified the Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI), a set of protocols defining how companies can safely move data between private and public clouds.
The Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) Cloud Storage Initiative Group submitted the standard for approval by the ISO last spring. CDMI is the first industry-developed open standard specifically for data storage as a service.

Starting with version 25 of Google Chrome, browser extensions installed offline by other applications will not be enabled until users give their permission through a dialog box in the browser interface.
At the moment developers have several options to install extensions offline -- not using the browser interface -- in Google Chrome for Windows. One of them involves adding special entries in the Windows registry that tell Chrome that a new extension has been installed and should be enabled.

Since 2010, SSD (solid state drive) prices have plummeted 300 percent since 2010, this year reaching what researchers call the magic price point of $1-per-gigabyte of capacity.
After dropping 20 percent in the second quarter of 2012 alone, SSD prices fell another 10 percent in the second half of the year, according to data from IHS iSupply.

Oracle surprised many tech industry observers by announcing Thursday it would pay $871 million for marketing automation software vendor Eloqua. The move seemed a bit unlikely given the amount of sales and marketing software Oracle already had.
But a closer look at the deal reveals a number of probable motives for Oracle, as well as what effects the deal could have on the market.
Oracle has agreed to acquire Eloqua for about $871 million, in a bid to build out a set of marketing automation software.
Eloqua's board has approved the deal and it is expected to close in the first half of next year, Oracle said Thursday.

This is the time of year when everyone and their dog posts their predictions for what will happen in the wacky world of tech in 2013. The reason? Nobody wants to work over the holidays, and a predictions post is one of those you can whip up ahead of time and pop in the microwave until it's time to publish. (Look for one coming from me over the next week or so.)
But I gotta hand it to the folks at cyber security firm Internet Identity. They decided to beat the rush, skip right over their 2013 predictions, and go straight to 2014.

Picking the bozos of the year is always bittersweet. It's altogether satisfying to call out the big cigars of the tech world -- and sometimes their allies in government -- who deserve to be ridiculed and brought to account. On the other hand, these bozos have caused damage to their companies, their employees, and their customers, which is no joking matter. Here are 2012's top five.

The last six years of mobile innovation, missteps, and regrouping will come to a head next year. We'll see if Apple has plateaued or, worse, petered out. We'll see if Google can rationalize the Android ecosystem and cement its market dominance through cohesion, and if Samsung can sustain its effort to be more than a mere device maker. We'll see if Research in Motion's two years of promises will become reality with the BlackBerry 10.

I'm often told by those in the cloud computing industry that the rise of cloud computing is a new, unique phenomenon. I'm not sure that's completely true.
I've often pointed out in this blog that the rise of cloud computing has some parallels with the rise of the Web and the technology created to support the Web in the 1990s. There were clear mistakes made back then, and it appears that some of us are doomed to repeat them.

But sometimes -- for the sake of performance, practicality, or politics -- a server simply must remain in the branch. It was for these intransigent servers, and to satisfy the needs of both server-hugging branch offices and control-hungry IT, that Riverbed Granite was born.
