Twitter's fake followers: Influence for sale

Mine is bigger than yours -- my Klout rating, that is. Yeah, it's pretty juvenile, but social media is turning into an adolescent measuring contest as the number of friends, followers, and tweets becomes a new digital status symbol. It appears that, like the pigs in Orwell's "Animal Farm," some AT&T customers are more equal than others.

Today's complaint? AT&T is allowing some of its iPhone-wielding customers to use Apple's FaceTime video chat over its wireless voice network, but not others. You've overcome your concerns about dropping all your files into SQL. SharePoint is now your primary means of collaboration in your organization. You've invested a tremendous amount of time and money to connect your employees and their data to improve workflow. If only SharePoint's search capabilities were better. If only users weren't spending so much time searching for relevant data or the appropriate personnel in the company. If only users weren't re-creating data they already have "somewhere."

How a bad buyout killed a good company

A satisfying IT job that directly contributes to a company's growth is certainly one to hold onto. But all too often business decisions beyond IT's control can kill a good organization and drive off faithful employees. I witnessed a maddening example of this tragedy early in my career, when I was hired to help a small computer firm expand its PC business.

Behind the headlines: What next-gen IT really needs to know

These days, the business and IT trade press seems to be missing some basic and obvious questions. From the Microsoft Surface to Yahoo to cloud break-ins to the ongoing demise of the personal computer, tech news or analysis has been leaving a lot of fundamental stones unturned.

Some of the currents and concerns behind these stories are integral to the changing face of IT, so missing key questions does you a disservice. To that end, here are the missing questions and how they're relevant to next-generation IT (except for a few that aren't, but annoyed me too much to ignore).

Chip sales falter in Q2 as weak market looms, IHS iSuppli says

Weak economies in the U.S. and Europe together with a slowdown in manufacturing in China hurt semiconductor sales during the second quarter this year, and the market will deteriorate further in the coming quarters as issues continue to plague chip suppliers, IHS iSuppli said in research released on Thursday.

HP reports $8.9B Q3 loss on writedowns, weak sales, lowers full-year forecast

Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday announced a $8.9 billion loss for its third quarter ended July 31 due to writedowns and weak hardware sales and also said full-year results would be at the low end of its previous guidance. Earlier this month, HP said it would take an $8 billion "impairment of goodwill" writedown against its services division. "Goodwill" refers to less tangible assets, such as brand strength, that are considered when figuring out a company's total value. HP's $13.9 billion acquisition of services provider EDS has been roundly criticized as too costly.

Data deduplication -- the process of detecting and removing duplicate data from a storage medium or file system -- is one of those simple ideas that gets complex in the implementation. Recently, I was faced with an interesting virtual networking problem: how to allow a large virtualization environment to be failed over to a recovery data center and thoroughly tested, without impacting the production network. In the end, I didn't achieve exactly what I set out to, but I did catch a glimpse of what the future might hold.
