Landmark California Location-Privacy Bill Nears Governor’s Desk

California lawmakers have approved legislation that would require the state's authorities to obtain a probable-cause warrant signed by a judge to obtain any location information from an electronic device -- from tablets and mobile phones to laptops. The measure, however, faces an uncertain fate before Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat who last year vetoed legislation demanding a court warrant for cops to seize cell phones from anybody arrested.
