Oracle likely to announce Exadata sequel soon
Many signs suggest that Oracle is about to introduce a next-generation version of the Exadata database machine, the first and apparently most successful of its "engineered systems" that combine Oracle software with servers, networking, and storage.
For one thing, Oracle's OpenWorld conference kicks off Sunday with a keynote from CEO Larry Ellison, and contrary to prior years, this time Oracle has told the public a bit of what Ellison plans to say.

The latter is an open source project now under the stewardship of Oracle, with its own strongly competitive set of features.

How to secure the Internet with a single service
I've been writing about how to secure the Internet for almost a decade, including in this InfoWorld position paper (PDF), which gives most of the details. My proposal is this: A new Internet channel must be created to establish pervasive authentication and improved services for identifying the bad guys.
That might seem like a tall order in today's ultramalicious online world, but it can all be readily done using existing protocols and integrate with all legacy systems.

More than two years ago, I wrote about the persisting value of tape as an archival backup medium. At the time, the LTO-5 tape standard had recently been announced in an effort to stave off ever-increasing pressure from disk-to-disk backup products. Since then, a lot has changed. Although the nearly twice-as-capable LTO-6 tape standard will hit the market soon, disk-to-disk backup has become a much more popular way to back up the enterprise.
